The Salmon Fishery

The Pebble Mine proposal threatens the Bristol Bay salmon fishery.

Southwest Alaska’s Bristol Bay watershed supports the world’s largest wild salmon runs and produces one third of the world’s wild sockeye salmon. It is vital to Alaska’s economy and to the many communities that depend on it as their primary food source.

An economic study found that:

  • On average, individuals in Bristol Bay communities harvest 315 pounds per person each year, as their main source of food.
  • The harvest and processing of Bristol Bay fish generates nearly $320 million a year, and provides jobs for some 12,500 people.
  • Fishermen spend nearly $60 million a year to experience the prize fishing in this area.
