The largest mine in North America, on top of the largest sockeye salmon fishery?

The Canadian company Northern Dynasty and London-based Anglo American are proposing a copper-gold mine “the Pebble Mine” in southwest Alaska. If developed, it would be the largest mine in North America. And it would be located at the headwaters of the world’s largest wild sockeye salmon fishery.

What Anglo American has said

In October 2007, Anglo American CEO Cynthia Carroll called for an open, transparent discussion about the proposed Pebble Mine, and stated that:

“We do not want to and will not be associated with the development of a mine that damages Alaska’s fisheries and wildlife, or the livelihoods of Alaskan communities. If the mine cannot be planned in a way that provides proper protections, it should not be built.”
